Free parcel data in Texas

Texas has no single free statewide parcel layer we could verify, but many counties publish their own. Basesheet currently uses 13 Texas county services: Bexar, Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Lubbock, Montgomery, Tarrant, Travis, Williamson.

County layers

Bexar County

MapServer layer 6 of BCAD's PAMapSearch service; it is a join, so every field name is fully qualified (e.g. 'PAMaps.dbo.web_map_property.geo_id') and must be used verbatim in where clauses and outFields. geo_id is the BCAD geographic ID 'NNNNN-NNN-NNNN' (NCB-block-lot), e.g. '00100-000-0050'; PROP_ID (integer) is the BCAD property/account ID, e.g. 101165. situs includes city and ZIP and is not always clean ('100 DOLOROSA 9 SAN ANTONIO, TX 78205'), so match with LIKE '100 %DOLOROSA%'. addr_city is the owner mailing city. Bexar County also republishes an older BCAD extract at maps.bexar.org/arcgis/rest/services/Parcels/MapServer/0 (fields PropID, AcctNumb, Situs), but its metadata dates from 2019, so the BCAD layer is preferred. No deed or plat fields.

Brazoria County

MapServer layer 1 ('Parcel Information'); layer 0 is 'Flagged Parcels' (illegal divisions, platting issues) and should not be used. Polygons are lot-level, so one property (prop_id) can have several polygons; an APN query may return more than one. geo_id is the BCAD geographic ID like '1310-0095-200', stored space-padded to 50 characters (equality matches still work, but trim for display); prop_id / PID are the integer BCAD property ID, e.g. 181572. Owner and legal text fields are also space-padded. SITUS is like '111 / 237 E LOCUST ST' (no city); situs_city is the situs city. DOCUMENT holds the deed instrument number.

Collin County

Hosted FeatureServer layer 4 ('Parcels'); other layers are county line, school districts, abstracts, special districts, subdivisions, city limits. geoID is the CCAD geographic ID like 'R-2667-001-01R1-1'; PROP_ID / propID is the integer CCAD property ID, e.g. 2871703. situsConcatShort is the street address with a trailing space ('2100 BLOOMDALE RD '); situsConcat adds city, state, ZIP. Deeds are referenced by instrument number (deedNum, e.g. '2022010000485'); deedBook holds the year for those, so no deed book/page mapping.

Dallas County

MapServer layer 4 (ParcelPublishing) of the ParcelQuery service; layers 0-3 are blocks, simultaneous conveyances, map grid and survey abstracts. PARCELID is the 17-character DCAD account number as a string with no separators, e.g. '00000101154000000' (LOWPARCELID is the same for ordinary parcels). SITEADDRESS is like '1400 YOUNG ST' with no city; PSTLCITY is the owner mailing city, not situs, so city_field is blank. PRPRTYDSCRP is the short legal (e.g. 'BLK D/81 82 83 E/87 88 1/89'); CNVYNAME is the addition/conveyance name. Several attribute values are space-padded. No deed or plat book fields.

Denton County

MapServer layer. pid is the integer DCAD (Denton) property ID, e.g. 167557; geoID is the geographic ID like 'SD0511A-000000-0000-0000-0000'. situs_street_address is like '110 W HICKORY ST'; situsCity is the situs city (addrCity is mailing). volume/page fields exist but hold inconsistent values, so they are not mapped; instrumentNum holds the deed instrument. The older Parcels/MapServer/0 layer on the same server has fewer fields and its CITY is the mailing city.

Fort Bend County

Hosted FeatureServer on FBCAD's own ArcGIS Enterprise. quickrefid is the FBCAD Quick Ref ID used on its property search, e.g. 'R112624'; propnumber is the long account/geo number like '7395-00-099-0000-901'. situs is mixed case with city and ZIP ('407 Jackson ST, Richmond, TX 77469'), so match case-insensitively; situssno/situssnm hold number and street name. No separate situs city field (ownercity is mailing). deedbook/deedpage are often blank for instrument-recorded deeds (instrunum).

Galveston County

Hosted FeatureServer in Galveston County's ArcGIS Online org (owner account also publishes the county's commissioner precincts and hurricane evacuation map). GEOID is the GCAD geographic ID like '3505-0320-0000-000'; PID is the GCAD property ID as a string, e.g. '102650'. SITUS includes city and ZIP ('722 MOODY GALVESTON, TX 77550'); CITY/ADDRESS* are the owner mailing address, so no situs city mapping. Value fields are year-named (VAL26LAND etc.), so the schema may change when the layer is refreshed for a new tax year. No deed or plat fields.

Harris County

MapServer layer. HCAD_NUM is the 13-digit HCAD account as a string with no separators, e.g. '0010320000001' (acct_num and LOWPARCELID hold the same value for normal parcels). No single situs-address field: the site address is split into site_str_num (integer), site_str_pfx, site_str_name, site_str_sfx, site_str_sfx_dir, so situs_field is left blank and address search will not work against this layer; site_city is the situs city. Stacked=1 marks stacked parcels (condos, leases, shared footprints), so a point can return several accounts on one footprint. legal_dscr_1..4 hold the legal description in parts. No deed or plat fields.

Lubbock County

MapServer layer 129 ('Parcels') of the LubbockCADWebService; the service has many annotation/label sublayers, so always use /129. PROP_ID is the LCAD property ID with an R prefix as a string, e.g. 'R153323' (QuickRefID is identical). Situs includes city and ZIP ('904 BROADWAY, LUBBOCK, TX 79401'); SitusSNo/SitusSNm hold number and street name; OwnerCity is mailing. DeedBook/DeedPage use '9999'/'999' as placeholders on some records; InstrNum holds newer instrument numbers.

Montgomery County

Hosted FeatureServer view. PIN and pid are the same integer MCAD property ID, e.g. 66093; MCAD's site sometimes shows it with an 'R' prefix (R66093), which must be stripped before querying since both fields are integers. situs includes city and ZIP without a comma before the state ('501 N THOMPSON, CONROE TX 77301'). No separate situs city field and no deed or plat fields.

Tarrant County

MapServer layer. ACCOUNT is the 8-digit TAD account number as a string with leading zeros, e.g. '06138578'; TAXPIN is the GIS lot key, e.g. '14437-A' (GISLINK is TAXPIN space-padded). SITUS_ADDR is space-padded ('100 W WEATHERFORD ST '), so trim; STREET_NO/PREDIR/STREET_NAM/STREET_TYP hold the parts. CITY is almost always blank (only ~120 rows populated), so city_field is left empty; OWNER_CITY is the mailing city. DEED_BOOK/DEED_PAGE are zero-filled ('0000000') when the deed is recorded by instrument number instead (INSTRUMENT_NO). LEGAL_1..LEGAL_4 hold the legal in parts.

Travis County

MapServer layer. PROP_ID is the TCAD property ID (integer, e.g. 194308), which is what TCAD's property search shows; geo_id is the 10-digit TCAD geographic ID string, e.g. '0206011507'. situs_address is like '700 LAVACA ST 78701' (street plus ZIP, sometimes city). situs_city is populated for only about 44% of parcels. No owner field in this public layer, and no deed or plat fields.

Williamson County

MapServer layer. QuickRefID is the WCAD Quick Ref ID, e.g. 'R320073' (PARCELID holds the same value); PropertyNumber is the long form like 'R-20-2000-0000-0191'. SITEADDRESS includes city and ZIP ('700 S MAIN ST, GEORGETOWN, TX 78626'); Scity is the situs city (Mcity is mailing). Deeds are referenced by InstrumentNumber; no deed book/page fields.

How to use it

• QGIS: Layer > Data Source Manager > ArcGIS REST Server, add a connection with the service URL (the endpoint above without the final /0), then add the layer. Filter to your area before exporting.
• ArcGIS Pro: Add Data > Data From Path, paste the endpoint.
• Direct query: append /query?geometry=LON,LAT&geometryType=esriGeometryPoint&inSR=4326&spatialRel=esriSpatialRelIntersects&outFields=*&f=geojson to get the parcel at a point.
• CAD: see getting a parcel into AutoCAD or Civil 3D.
